Over 150 delegates met from January 31 to February 5, 2009 in Las Vegas to share experiences, learn new skills and meet other members who are doing similar and very important work. In the plenary sessions, the delegates heard: - a report on the UAW and pending pro-worker legislation from Bob Madore, Region 9A Director
State of the Union address from NOLSW/UAW Local 2320 President Gordon Deane a presentation on the economy by Jonathan Tasini of Labor Research Association "Coalition Building" by Sarita Gupta of Jobs with Justice a report on the successful struggle at Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County to beat back so-called "merit pay" Ron Bender, a worker who participated in the successful sit-in at Republic Window and Door in Chicago a tribute to former NOLSW/UAW Local President Ellen Wallace Tim Yeager, our Financial Secretary, who tied it all together and set out what the union needs to do
There were workshops on skills such as bargaining, grievance handling, contract action, coalition building, political action, dealing with layoff situations and how to organize a unit. There were five workshop sessions so delegates had an opportunity to attend most of the workshops. The four day event ended with a business meeting where the delegates passed bylaw changes that established a NOLSW/UAW Local 2320 retiree chapter and fixed some administrative problems. There were also many opportunities for delegates to meet each other informally. The evaluations that delegates filled out afterward were overwhelmingly positive about all four days. There were some good suggestions on how to keep on improving our National Join Council meetings. | |
