UAW Local 2320, the National Organization of Legal Services Workers (NOLSW), stands firmly in solidarity with our union siblings with UAW Local 2325, the Association of a Legal Aid Attorneys (ALAA) as they continue to be targeted for advocating for the human rights and dignity of Palestinians and supporting the Palestinian liberation movement.
After facing a lawsuit that stifled the exercise of union democracy, ALAA members are confronting another unjustified attack.
ALAA members passed a “Resolution Calling for a Ceasefire in Gaza, an end to the Israeli Occupation of Palestine, and Support for Workers’ Political Speech” in December 2023 with almost two thirds of members in support. In January, the Chair of the House Committee on Education and Workforce sent a letter mischaracterizing the content of the resolution, attacking the union’s democratic processes, and requesting documents related to the vote normally kept confidential among union members such as meeting minutes. After ALAA declined to respond to the committee’s baseless information requests, the chairperson sent the union a subpoena.
NOLSW resoundingly condemns these profoundly anti-democratic, anti-union, McCarthyist-like actions. Like our ALAA siblings, NOLSW membership also voted to support the liberation of Palestine and believes that politicians should not interfere with union democracy. An injury to one of us is an injury to each and every one of us. An attack on ALAA is an attack on our entire movement.
