A year ago, workers at Root & Rebound (a legal services organization in Oakland, CA that does reentry services and other legal sercies for fomerly incarcerated people) reached out to NOLSW-UAW Local 2320 to unionize in response to many years of economic uncertainty, toxic managers, and detachment of the organization from its values. After almost a year-long fight, Root & Rebound Association of Workers was recognized in September of last year and joined NOLSW-UAW Local 2320. Since then, management has refused to bargain with the union.
Then in February of this year, the staff worked for a whole month with no pay. After a month of work with no pay, on March 17th, management locked the staff out of their jobs and canceled their healthcare. Workers have been prevented from supporting their clients and fulfilling their legal duties. The employer has not been responsive to requests for information but has made unsubstantiated claims of financial hardship, while at the same time the organization spent over 100K on consultants and counsel to union bust. So on March 19th, the workers made the difficult but necessary decision to go on strike.
Management has refused to meet with the union and listen to our many concerns. We are fighting to save this non-profit so we can continue to do our vital reentry and legal services work for formerly incarcerated folks, and fighting for dignity and respect at work.
